This volume was a project funded by the Maryland Bicentennial Commission, and was directed and edited by Admiral Ernest McNeill Eller, a former Director of Naval History for the U.S. Navy. Although the project was begun at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, it soon became apparent that it was more then the museum could handle, and Washington College at Chestertown, MD, became the headquarters for the project. The book consists of 14 chapters, each prepared by a different historian, covering a wide range of subjects dealing primarily with naval aspects of the revolution. Of particular importance to this collection are chapters 6 and 10. Chapter 6, by Myron J. Smith, Jr. (Dir. Of Libraries, Assoc. Prof. of History, Salem College, WV), and John Earle (naval architect and marine engineer), dealt with the Maryland State Navy; and chapter 10, by Joseph A. Robinson (1909-1998) (Research Fellow & Instructor, English History, U. of PA), discussed the British invasion of the Chesapeake. In the course of preparing these chapters, a large volume of historical material was collected by Robinson and Earle. In 2000 Joseph Robinson's widow, Madeline L. Robinson, donated the bulk of the material in the collection. Additional material from John Earle was donated in 2005.Scope and ContentMaterial in the collection covers the full period of the project, from the initial stages of the establishment of the project, through the research for the subjects of the two chapters mentioned above, to the preparation and publication of the chapters themselves. Both the Robinson and Earle material also includes comments and suggestions for other chapters in the book, especially chapter 3, by Arthur Pierce Middleton (former Dir. Of Research, Colonial Williamsburg), on ships and shipbuilding in the bay and its rivers. The collection contains numerous letters between Robinson, Eller, and Earle concerning the research and editing of the chapters. Earle in particular made many recommendations for additions and improvements in the text of each chapter, most of which were accepted by the editor and included in the final draft.Sub'ectsVessels:Galleys: Annapolis, Baltimore, Chester, Conqueror, Independence, Johnson, Snow. 250000.1100photographsHerman Hollerith, Jr. (1892-1976) Photo Collection1890-1970This is a collection of many photographs, which have not been cataloged individually. Please review the attachments for specific information on the images.

Herman Hollerith, Jr. (1892-1976) Photo Collections (1890s--1970s) Biographical Background: Herman Hollerith, Jr. was born in 1892 at 3112 Q St., Georgetown, District of Columbia to Herman Hollerith, Sr. and Lucia Talcott Hollerith. His father invented the punch-card tabulating machine. He sold his company in 1911 to a firm that later became IBM. Other Hollerith children were Nan, Richard, Charles, Virginia and Lucia. The family lived in Georgetown, Garret Park and Montgomery County. In 1908 they bought a summer home in Mathews County, Virginia named Brighton. They spent their summers at Brighton from 1909. The family had a number of boats which were kept at Brighton: a New England dory named LUVINA; a flat bottomed power workboat named BRIGHTON; a 45 foot, gas powered yacht named REGINA, which was later renamed LUVINA and later still renamed MATOAKA, and an 85 foot vacht named LUVINA. The name Luvina was derived from the three daughter's names, Lucia, Virginia and Nan. Herman Hollerith, Jr. attended Worchester Polytechnic College with his borther, Charles, and received an engineering degree in 1917. He worked at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia, and then at the Victor Talking Maching Company, where he was chief engineer and production engineer. During this time he lived in Riverton and Moorestown, New Jersey. He quit the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1928 when it was purchased by RCA. From 1932-1936 Hollerith was president of the Virginia Navigation Company and operated a small passenger steamer under contract to a large corporation. From 1936-39 he did not work during the Depression. In 1939 he moved to Baltimore to work for the Glenn L. Martin Company where he was involved in building airplanes during WWII. Hollerith worked until he was 69 years old. He was married twice. He and Sarah Valentine Fox had four children and were divorced in 1936. In 1938 he married Elisabeth C. Guest. In 1954 he bought a house near Oxford, Maryland and retired there in 1961. Hollerith was active in the early days ofnthe Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and was instrumental in the move of the Hooper Strait Lighthouse to the grounds. Hollerith had a love for boats and owned the ERIC, launched in 1925, until his death. This sailboat was an Atkins design based on a Norwegian ketch. ERIC was the prototype of the Westsai1 32. Hollerith died in 1976. For more information about the Hollerith family researchers should consult: HERMAN HOLLERITH: FORGOTTEN GIANT OF INFORMATION PROCESSING, by Geoffrey D. Austrian; NY: 1982, Columbia University Press. Scope and Content: This collection consists of photos taken or collected by Hollerith. The bulk of photos were taken by Hollerith of scenes from 1915-1940. They feature steamboat and sailboat scenes on the lower Chesapeake. Many of the photos were taken on cruises around Mathews County, Va. Some photos (especially M series negatives) were collected by Hollerith and taken by his father and brothers. The photos depict the agriculture life of the lower western shore and often show the introduction of power. Many of these photos have been published. The water was an important focus for life in Brighton. Mrs. Elisabeth Hollerith supplied a quote from Hollerith about life in Brighton: We did everything by boat, used the daily steamer from Norfolk for transportation to and from Washington and for most supplies including ice. Met the steamer at one of the wharves on the East River each day to pick up mail, visiting friends, etc. The roads were so bad we rarely went inland. Went to church and to visit our friends in a motor boat. In addition to the following subject indices, the researcher should note that Hollerith had his own subject indices. These are available to researchers and especially useful in looking for boat names. They are stored with the negatives. Subjects:Airplanes; Caribbean; C & D Canal; Eastern Shore; Hollerith, Herman, Jr.; Log canoes; Mathews county, Va.; Old Point Comfort, Va.; Sailboats, commercial; Seafood Industry; Steamboats, Chesapeake Bay; Washington, DC; workboats, Chesapeake Bay. 268888.0136.0000.00records (documents)Gray and Waller Packing Co Records, 1900-1940s1900-1940Scope and Content: The collection consists primarily of ledgers related to the companies operation and supples. Payments to oystermen, crabbers, and shuckers are noted by individual name. Some ledgers have widely mixed dates, which appear to be the result of "available space" ( if a particular year ledger was filled or not readily available, another year's ledger, with unused pages, was used). Contracts and agreements are also included on some ledger pages.
Additional loose materials include calculations and work sheets, (later transferred to the ledger and usually un-dated), letters from venders, shipping forms, personal letters, advertisements, government letters pertaining to requests for development of oyster grounds, and Corp of Engineers regulations.
Biographical/Historical Note: The materials in this collection were purchased at Dixon's Auction, Crumpton, Md. circa 2012. The book " Elliott's Island: the land that time forgot" ( A.M.Foley and Freddie T. Waller, 1999, Dogwood Ridge Books, Elliott, Md) notes that Gray and Waller was one of several shucking houses on the island. The book notes that the business was operated by James Prettyman Gray and his brother-in-law Thomas "Monk" Waller at the Low-er Creek from around 1917 to 1925. Foley and Waller indicate that the company was known primarily as an oyster house although records show wholesale crabmeat shipments to Baltimore. Records contained in these ledgers also show fur trapping, fish and seasonal fruit and vegetable packaging and shipments , although these appear to represent a minor endeavor compared to oysters and crabs. The Elliott's Island book provides a very limited description of this company. In 1925 Prettyman Gray attempted to sell the company to brothers Joseph, Ira, and Carl, but the sale was not completed. The book notes, "Eight years later the shucking house, long since idle, was washed out by the August Storm of 1933. Ira and Joe Gray picked up the pieces from the mouth of McCready Creek, trucked them home to Gate Point, and built I. Gray and Bro., a shucking house which em-ployed a number of local shuckers, including Phyllis Gray, Bertie Gray, Gertie Gray, and Elsie Woodland ( the ledgers include activity and payment to these and other workers). The brothers owned private oysterbeds (sic) off from Gates Point and Joe Gray owned the buyboat Lucky Lindy with which to supply the business" ( El-liott's Island, pp. 114-115).
The ledger entries end in the 1940's although the Elliott Bros. crabhouse continued under new ownership. Ches-ter and Jean Martinek ran the operation until it burned in 1962. Although Foley and Waller note the business was idle sometime during the period from 1925 to 1933, the ledgers indicate a variety of continuing operations.
4 boxesNo image URL.View
